Both photography and ethnography seek to convey stories of people and places, of particularities, often stubborn yet entangled with the wider world. I believe that arts and academia add to each other in this endeavour. Together, they can seed impressions that challenge general assumptions and let the world appear in a different light. At their best, they help us see the other image.
For the past twelve years I have been dividing my time between film and anthropology. I have made two feature-length documentaries, did a PhD, wrote a book and carried out research in Siberia, Tibet and the Himalayas. This website is my attempt to bring my visual and my academic work together on a practical, daily basis. It is not a portfolio to showcase polished images. Making visual and academic work integral to each other is an ongoing experiment. This blog provides glimpses into this experiment for fellow travellers between arts and scholarship.
