Rabten does not like to stay in one place. All his life, he has been on the move, spending little time in his native village in Humla. During summers he finds work and shelter in Purang, just across the border in Tibet. When the nights get colder, he slowly makes his way down to the lower hills of Nepal and on to Kathmandu where he stays with relatives. But city life gives him itchy feet and soon he moves again.
We met in Sallikhola, where he was helping out in his younger brother’s camp. He likes listening to Nepali music and news broadcasts. However, here in Sallikhola the deep Karnali gorge swallows all but the most clamorous signals in the ether.
